What the MACD shows
The MACD reduces price action into a single line that lives in the unbounded range. It is a Trend-Following Momentum indicator, meaning it is most useful for spotting when the current move is over-extended relative to recent history.
Three things the MACD tells you at a glance:
- Whether the move is stretched. Extreme readings often precede a pause or reversal.
- Whether momentum is consistent. A reading holding at one extreme is a stronger signal than a single print.
- Whether divergence is forming. When price prints a new extreme but the MACD does not, the move is losing energy.
