Mean Reversion Strategy: A Repeatable TradingLens Framework

The Mean Reversion strategy is a rules-based approach designed for ETFs on the 1H timeframe. TradingLens built this guide so you can apply the same step-by-step workflow we use to identify high-probability setups, define invalidation, and manage risk. Use it as a checklist — not as a signal service — and pair it with our chart analyzer for confirmation.

Why the Mean Reversion strategy works

The Mean Reversion strategy is rooted in a simple idea: when price behaves a certain way on the 1H, the follow-through is statistically measurable. We focus on ETFs because liquidity and volatility are consistent enough to make the rules robust.

Three principles hold the strategy together:

  1. Structure first. Wait for a clearly defined range, trend, or level on the 1H.
  2. Trigger second. Look for a single, observable trigger — a break, a retest, or a rejection.
  3. Risk third. Define the stop before you define the target. The size of the stop dictates the size of the position.

If you skip the first two, you will be reacting. If you skip the third, you will eventually be ruined.

How to apply the Mean Reversion strategy

Follow this sequence every time. Do not skip steps.

1. Mark structure

Annotate the most recent swing high, swing low, and the range they define on the 1H chart.

2. Wait for the trigger

The trigger for Mean Reversion is the moment structure resolves. That might be a clean break of a level, a retest that holds, or a wick rejection at the boundary.

3. Plan the trade

Before clicking buy or sell, write down the entry, the stop, and the target. If you cannot articulate all three in a single sentence, the setup is not ready.

4. Size the position

Risk a fixed percentage of your account per trade. The Mean Reversion strategy works best when risk per trade is consistent and small.

5. Review

After the close of the next candle, compare the actual outcome to the planned trade. The compounding edge comes from the review, not from any single setup.

Best market conditions for Mean Reversion

The Mean Reversion strategy performs best when:

  • ETFs are trending or transitioning between clear ranges
  • Volatility is high enough to reach the target before the stop
  • Session volume is steady — illiquid hours distort the trigger

Avoid applying Mean Reversion during major news events unless you have a plan for the gap. The strategy is mechanical, and so is the risk.

Common mistakes with Mean Reversion

The most common failure mode is moving the stop. The second is entering before the trigger has actually printed. Both of these are solved by writing the plan down before the trade.

A third mistake is reusing the strategy on a timeframe that is too short. The 1H chart is the right starting point because the noise is lower and the signal is cleaner.

Frequently asked questions

What timeframe is best for the Mean Reversion strategy?+

The Mean Reversion strategy is tuned for the 1H chart. It can be applied on higher timeframes for position traders and on lower timeframes only with smaller size and tighter invalidation.

Can I use Mean Reversion on crypto and stocks?+

Yes. The Mean Reversion strategy is instrument-agnostic. The examples here use ETFs, but the rules transfer.

How many trades per week should I expect?+

On the 1H chart, the Mean Reversion strategy typically triggers between one and three setups per week, depending on the instrument.

What is the minimum account size?+

There is no fixed minimum, but the strategy requires that the per-trade risk is a small fixed percentage of total equity. If the dollar risk on the smallest valid position is too high relative to your account, size down.
